The Florida Crop and Livestock Reporting Service functions as the field unit
of the Division of Agricultural Statistics of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics,
United States Department of Agriculture, with the Department of Economics, Agri-
cultural Experiment Station, University of Florida, co-operating on vegetable
estimates, In. this capacity it prepares for its Washington office estimates,
forecasts, current reports and records on Florida agriculture. These are corre-
lated with similar data for all other States for the presentation of a systematic
statistical story of the nation' s crops. Through cooperative effort a much more
thorough and complete statistical coverage is made of the many crops and such an
arrangement eliminates duplication of effort between State and Federal Agencies.

During the year the Orlando office issues semi-monthly reports or. vegetable
crops in the State, giving current reports on the progress and prospects in the
various producing areas. Acreage and production forecasts are prepared monthly
during the producing season and, are released around the 10th of each month. All
of these reports are available to interested persons free of charge.

This booklet was prepared in response to a demand for count;' data relating
to the acreage of vegetable crops within the State and for readily available
statistical information concerning the production and value of these crops. This
information .is presented by seasonal groupings, such as fall, winter and spring,
\vith a seasonal summary for each crop covered. Those crops which are of minor
importance commercially are not included in this summary. Neither does it include
vegetables grown in homo gardens or in' small market garden plots adjacent to some
of our larger "cities. The watermelon acreages do not include plantings made
strictly for seed. Data on potatoes refer only to the commercial crop. In recent
ye^rs soua,sh, cauliflower and carrots have become commercially important in this
State and it is hoped that satisfactory statistics can be developed on these crops
in the near future. Additional copies of this booklet may be had upon request as
long as the supply lasts. It is our intention in the future to keep this booklet
revised and brought up to date after the close of each shipping season.

The data contained in this report except for shipment information are
estimates and are based on reports by, and interviews with, growers, shippers, ,
marketing associations, seedsmen, county agricultural agents, railroad represen-
tatives, canners and processors, the Federal-State Inspection and Market LTews
Services, the Florida State Marketing Bureau, the Florida State Marketing Board,
and its market managers, the Production and 'Marketing Administration, (formerly
A. A. A.) and other well-informed sources. We would like to take this occasion
to gratefully acknowledge our indebtedness to each person and organization who
has contributed to the development cf these data. Their cooperation has made
this report possible.

ACB3S ?0R HAH73ST - Acres for harvest is considered as "being all
acreage fron which a crop coul d have been harvested had economic conditions
(prices, available labor, etc.) warranted the harvest. Acreage which pro-
duces such low yields or poor quality that the crop is not worth picking
at any reasonable price is considered as crop failure and is not included
in the acreage for harvest, Unharvested acreage which produces yields
which would be harvested at reasonable prices is included in acreage for
harvest.

ZC 01 7 0I II C A3 AITX3I1K5HT - This category includes nature production not
harvested because of economic factors, such as low prices, shortage of
labor, etc. Such loss of production includes quantities left in fields
partially harvested as well as production on acreage abandoned for economic
reasons.

YIZ5U) - Yield refers to total production of merchantable quality
produced on an acre basis and may include unharvested production.

PROUJCTIOIT - Total production represents the yield tines the acres
for harvest. Production of value is that part of the production which
was harvested and sold or utilized while in the fresh state and does not
include economic abandonment.

TJ1TIT OR PBIC3 - All of the prices used in this report are on

*n jT.0.3, basis less selling charges. In the case of some commodities which
are sold in different units than the one listed, these units are converted
into the equivalent of the ones used.

TOTAL VALUE ~ The total value is the price per unit times the pro-
duction of value.

CAIA^D OR PE0C3SS5D A023AG5 AFP PBOBKOTL?:'

The acreage of vegetables in Florida planted solely for canning and
processing purposes during the period covered by this publication has been
insignificant. She acreages of beans and tomatoes, the principal crops
canned, arc planted primarily for fresh market but during recent years
substantial quantities have been canned. In order to conform to the
national pattern for recording the fresh and processed production, wo
have shown the equivalent acreage on which this processed production would
have boon grown and listed the remainder as acreage grown for fresh market-
production.

UNITED STATES DEPART?®! T OF AGRICULTURE
BUREAU OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS

Box 273

Orlando, Florida
February 11, 1946

Dear Sir:

The enclosed booklet is being sent to you with
the hope that it will be useful to you as a handy
reference of statistical information on vegetables
grown in Florida.

The forward, index, and definitions and ex-
planations on the first five pages will give you a
quick picture of the material presented and aid you
in locating the information desired. Ue realize that
more detail could have been presented, but feel that
too much detail would reduce the practical value of
the book.

life will appreciate any suggestions for improve-
ment in future additions. As a parting remark, we
wish to say that the information is the best that we
have been able to gather together, but that wo are
always open to suggestions and are willing to make any
corrections that can be substantiated.

We again wish to thank those who have cooperated
with us in the past, and sincerely hope that they will
continue to work with us in the future so that we may
be able to present the most accurate information
possible on Florida truck crops.

Yours truly,

J. C. Townsend, Jr.
